Psychic Frog

Modern Horizons III has arrived on MTG Arena and with it comes Psychic Frog’s Horizon Hideaway and its corresponding currency: Tickets.

Psychic Frog’s Horizon Hideaway is a specialty store that utilizes tickets; a new unique digital currency. The mind reading amphibian’s shop offers a variety of items for sale including cosmetics such as Avatars, Sleeves and Card Styles as well as boosts to your collection in the form of Packs, Random Mythic Cards and a Draft Token.

How do I unlock the store?

Psychic Frog’s Horizon Hideaway can be unlocked for the price of 2800 gems in the MTGA store. You can earn and save tickets before purchasing the store, then once unlocked you can spend your tickets on rewards.

How to earn tickets?

You earn 45 tickets as a reward for completing a daily quest. You also earn tickets for winning games: 2 tickets per game for your first 5 wins in a day, and 1 ticket per game for the next 5 wins.

What is for sale in Psychic Frog’s Horizon Hideaway?

  • Rare: 13 options for 6 Tickets each
  • Uncommon: 16 options for 4 Tickets each
  • Common: 15 options for 2 Tickets each

Sleeves

  • 6 New sleeves featuring legendary MH3 creatures for 55 Tickets Each
  • Thief of Existence sleeves go for 100 Tickets

Avatars

  • Kaalia, Ashling, Grist and Six go for 70 Tickets each
  • Ulamog is priced at 85 Tickets

Packs and More

  • Draft token: 300 Tickets
  • Random MH3 Mythic Card: 70 Tickets (Limit of 10)
  • MH3 Pack: 95 Tickets (Limit of 8)

Is it worth spending 2800 gems to unlock this store?

There are a few things to keep in mind when answering this question:

  • 2800 Gems is worth roughly $16
  • The store is only available for 50 days, after which your tickets will expire
  • Buying everything in the store would cost you 2,799 tickets
  • You can earn a maximum of 60 tickets per day totalling 3000 tickets over the 50 days if you maximize your rewards (45 from daily quest, and 15 from 10 daily wins) - this requires a fair bit of consistency and time
  • How much do you value Cosmetics vs Packs and More?

What is my game plan?

I am viewing this shop as a way to turn tickets into gems. So first I need to figure out the gem value equivalent of each reward:

  • Card Styles: Vary but typically between 100 and 500 gems each
  • Sleeves: 600-1200 gems each
  • Avatars: 500 gems each
  • Draft token: 1500 gems
  • Mythic Card: Roughly 100 gems
  • MH3 Pack: 200 gems

I don’t care for cosmetics very much, but I do want to build my collection as efficiently as possible. Here is my quick value analysis of the non-cosmetic items:

Draft Token

  • 300 Tickets ←→ 1500 gems
  • 5 gems/ticket
  • Limit 1

MH3 Pack

  • 95 Tickets ←→ 200 gems
  • 2.1 gems/ticket
  • Limit 8

Random Mythic Card

  • 70 Tickets ←→ 100 gems
  • 1.4 gems/ticket
  • Limit 10

If I have to spend 2800 gems I want to make sure I get at least that much value.

The break even point here is the Draft Token and at least 7 Packs. A 2900 gem valuation for 965 tokens.

Personally, I will wait to purchase the store until I save up at least 1060 tickets to get that 8th pack.

This means I need to hit 24 daily quests over the next 48 days which is achievable at a casual pace of play, especially considering that daily quests can stack up to 3 days in a row. Any extra gems will first go towards Random Mythic Cards, then I’ll consider some cosmetics.

Wrapping up

While some players are instantly annoyed at another limited currency and shop, I think it can actually be viewed as a discounted way to grow your collection if you play somewhat consistently.
