The Plane of Mirrodin
Fifth Dawn is a Magic: The Gathering set set on the plane of Mirrodin, an artificial world created by the planeswalker Karn and illuminated by five suns. This metallic plane is covered in metal and inhabited by various races including elves, leonin, vedalken, and goblins, along with numerous constructs and artifact creatures.
The Conflict on Mirrodin
In the story of Fifth Dawn, the elf Glissa Sunseeker, accompanied by Bosh and Slobad, journeys to confront Memnarch, the guardian of the plane. After Memnarch seizes control of the summoned Kaldra avatar and pursues them into the Tangle, Glissa unleashes a massive surge of green mana that defeats the avatar and brings forth the fifth sun, marking a pivotal change for the plane.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Fifth Dawn
Fifth Dawn in Magic: The Gathering introduces the sunburst mechanic, which places +1/+1 counters on artifact creatures or charge counters on artifacts equal to the number of different colors of mana spent to cast the spell. The set continues the Mirrodin block’s emphasis on artifacts while encouraging multicolored mana usage. These elements create the flavor of a metallic world awakening as the fifth sun dawns over Mirrodin.
