The Plane of Alara

Shards of Alara introduces Alara, a plane in Magic: The Gathering that was shattered into five isolated shards centuries ago: Bant, Esper, Grixis, Jund, and Naya. Each shard exists in its own pocket of reality and is missing two colors of mana, resulting in dramatically different societies, ecosystems, and cultures shaped by their limited magical resources.

The Conflict on Alara

In the story of Shards of Alara, the five shards exist in relative isolation. On Bant, knights and angels uphold a rigid caste system of honor. Esper is a cold, artifact-driven realm ruled by sphinxes and mages. Grixis is a nightmarish world of death and necromancy. Jund is a savage volcanic hell dominated by dragons and warriors. Naya is a lush jungle paradise where beasts and humans live in primal harmony. Each shard faces internal struggles as its inhabitants adapt to life without the missing colors of mana.

The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Shards of Alara

Shards of Alara emphasizes three-color synergies and distinct shard identities in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces five signature mechanics, one for each shard: Exalted (Bant), Unearth (Grixis), Devour (Jund), Resounding (Naya), and artifact-focused strategies (Esper). The set is built around powerful multicolored cards and shard-specific themes, capturing the flavor of five unique, self-contained worlds born from the fracturing of a once-whole plane.
