The Plane of Alara
Alara Reborn concludes the Alara block on Alara in Magic: The Gathering, a plane fractured centuries earlier into five isolated shards—Bant, Esper, Grixis, Jund, and Naya—each missing two colors of mana. The shards developed vastly different societies and ecosystems shaped by their limited mana. Now the long-dormant Conflux begins, causing the five shards to slowly reconnect and overlap.
The Conflict on Alara
In the story of Alara Reborn, the Conflux triggers massive upheaval as the shards collide. Mana from opposing colors floods into once-isolated regions, destabilizing societies and sparking conflict between cultures that have never before interacted. Planeswalkers such as Ajani Goldmane witness the reunification, as old rivalries ignite and new alliances form amid the chaos of a plane being forcibly remade.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Alara Reborn
Alara Reborn celebrates the dramatic reunification of Alara in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces the Cascade mechanic, which exiles cards from the top of your library until you find a spell with lower mana value and allows you to cast it for free. The set contains no monocolored non-artifact cards, instead featuring a high density of multicolored spells and creatures that support the five three-color shard archetypes. These mechanics capture the flavor of clashing worlds and the explosive mixing of once-separated magics.
