The Plane of Zendikar
Battle for Zendikar returns to Zendikar, a mana-rich and volatile plane in Magic: The Gathering defined by its dangerous, ever-shifting landscapes known as the Roil. The plane is dotted with ancient hedrons—massive floating stones—and features rugged continents including Akoum, Bala Ged, Guul Draz, Murasa, Ondu, Sejiri, and Tazeem. Long-dormant Eldrazi forces begin to awaken across the world.
The Conflict on Zendikar
In the story of Battle for Zendikar, the ancient prisons containing the Eldrazi titans are broken. Ulamog and his brood emerge, consuming the plane’s life and mana. Planeswalkers including Nissa Revane and Kiora join forces with Zendikari survivors to fight back against the Eldrazi invasion. The conflict centers on containing the titans and preventing the complete consumption of Zendikar.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Battle for Zendikar
Battle for Zendikar emphasizes large-scale conflict and land synergy in Magic: The Gathering. It reintroduces the Landfall mechanic, which triggers powerful effects whenever a land enters the battlefield. The set introduces Awaken, allowing players to turn lands into 0/0 Elemental creature tokens with +1/+1 counters, and features Converge and Ingest mechanics. These elements, combined with strong colorless Eldrazi themes and expeditionary flavor, capture the desperate struggle against cosmic invaders on a living, dangerous plane.
