Bloomburrow: The Pastoral Plane of Magic: The Gathering

Bloomburrow is a Magic: The Gathering set that explores a pastoral plane inhabited by anthropomorphic animalfolk who unite against the threats of elemental Calamity Beasts. The plane of Bloomburrow features the region known as Valley, a temperate land of meadows, ponds, marshes, hills, and thickets where animalfolk of many species—rabbits, otters, frogs, squirrels, birds, bats, mice, raccoons, lizards, and rats—live in harmony. These sapient creatures maintain advanced communities with farms, cities like Three Tree City and Fountainport, and a culture centered on family, art, and shared knowledge. No humans inhabit the plane; visitors transform into animal forms. Central to their society is weaving, a natural form of magic drawn from the world itself to light hearths, grow crops, and shape the environment.

The Central Conflict of Bloomburrow

In Bloomburrow, the animalfolk of Valley face recurring devastation from Calamity Beasts, massive non-sapient elemental creatures that control seasons, weather, and climate through floods, blizzards, droughts, and other forces of nature. The set’s story follows a band of animalfolk heroes who investigate and confront the rampages of these beasts, including the Great-Night Owl known as Maha, to protect their homes and families. Drawing on legends of past heroes like Lily of Valley and the sword Cragflame, the protagonists form alliances across species to restore balance to the plane after a series of unexpected attacks disrupts the peaceful order of Valley.

Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Bloomburrow in Magic: The Gathering

Bloomburrow delivers a strong typal identity in Magic: The Gathering, with each two-color draft archetype built around a specific animalfolk creature type and supported by ten focused creature groups. New mechanics emphasize themes of community and resourcefulness, including abilities that evoke family bonds, generous gifts, valiant efforts in combat, foraging from the environment, and expending resources for greater effect. Flavorfully, the set captures a folk-tale-inspired world where small creatures wield weaving magic and heroic resolve against overwhelming natural forces, highlighting cooperation, stewardship of the land, and the enduring strength of tightly knit communities in the face of calamity.
