The Plane of Alara
Conflux is the second set in the Alara block on Alara in Magic: The Gathering, a plane that was shattered centuries ago into five isolated shards—Bant, Esper, Grixis, Jund, and Naya—each missing two colors of mana. The long-dormant Conflux has begun, causing the shards to slowly drift toward one another and begin overlapping, mixing their mana and environments for the first time in generations.
The Conflict on Alara
In the story of Conflux, the merging of the shards creates chaos and opportunity. Inhabitants from vastly different cultures suddenly encounter one another as landscapes collide. Planeswalkers including Ajani Goldmane navigate the upheaval as old power structures are challenged and new conflicts arise between the once-isolated societies. The reunification brings both hope for a restored plane and immediate violence as resources and territories are contested.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Conflux
Conflux emphasizes the dramatic collision of Alara’s five shards in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces the Domain mechanic, which scales effects based on the number of basic land types controlled, and continues support for the five three-color shard archetypes. The set features a high number of multicolored cards and powerful hybrid mana costs, capturing the flavor of clashing magics, cultures, and environments as the plane begins to heal through turbulent reunification.
