The Plane of Dominaria
Coldsnap is a Magic: The Gathering set set on the plane of Dominaria, specifically on the continent of Terisiare. This region, once devastated by the Brothers’ War and gripped by the Ice Age, is now experiencing the Thaw, as the long-frozen lands begin to melt and warm, bringing rebirth to the scarred landscape.
The Conflict on Dominaria
In the story of Coldsnap, the melting ice sparks both hope and opposition across Terisiare. While most inhabitants welcome the return of warmth, the Cult of Rimewind, led by Heidar, seeks to preserve eternal winter. This secretive society of mages works to halt the Thaw, even awakening ancient Phyrexian war machines buried beneath the ice to enforce their icy vision and maintain control.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Coldsnap
Coldsnap in Magic: The Gathering returns to the cold, Nordic-inspired themes of the Ice Age block. The set reintroduces the snow mechanic, with cards that interact with snow permanents and produce snow mana. It introduces two new keyword mechanics: Ripple, which allows revealing cards from the top of the library to find copies, and Recover, which returns cards from the graveyard under certain conditions. It also features returning elements such as cumulative upkeep. These mechanics, combined with the setting of a world shifting from ice to thaw, create the flavor of a continent in transition, caught between frozen history and emerging change.
