The Plane of Ravnica
Dragon's Maze concludes the Return to Ravnica block on Ravnica, the vast city-plane in Magic: The Gathering governed by its ten powerful guilds. The ancient Guildpact that maintained peace between the guilds has been broken, causing rising tensions across the layered urban metropolis.
The Conflict on Ravnica
In the story of Dragon's Maze, the Izzet League discovers the Implicit Maze (also known as the Dragon's Maze), a vast network of mana leylines connecting all ten guildgates. Created long ago by the parun Azor I as a contingency should the Guildpact ever fail, the maze offers immense power to whoever completes it. Niv-Mizzet calls upon all guilds to send champions in a grand race through the labyrinth, while planeswalker Jace Beleren becomes deeply involved in unraveling its secrets and preventing catastrophic guild warfare. At its conclusion, Jace assumes the role of the Living Guildpact.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Dragon's Maze
Dragon's Maze celebrates all ten guilds of Ravnica in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces the Fuse mechanic on split cards, allowing players to cast both halves of a card together as one spell. The set continues support for guild-specific mechanics from the block and emphasizes multicolored strategies, guildgates, and guild cooperation (or competition), capturing the high-stakes political intrigue and race across the guild-dominated city-plane.
