The Plane of Ravnica
Dissension is a Magic: The Gathering set set on the plane of Ravnica, an endless cityscape that has covered the entire world for millennia. This overdeveloped plane is home to ten guilds, each assigned a specific role in society through the ancient Guildpact, which maintained order until its dissolution by the machinations of certain guilds, leading to rising chaos across the city.
The Conflict on Ravnica
In the story of Dissension, guild fights guild as Ravnica descends into bloodshed and horrifying monsters known as nephilim ravage the streets. As the city crumbles, the calculated nature behind the chaos emerges, with the final three guilds—the Azorius Senate, the Cult of Rakdos, and the Simic Combine—playing key roles in the escalating tensions and power struggles that threaten the plane's fragile order.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Dissension
Dissension in Magic: The Gathering completes the Ravnica block by introducing the final three two-color guilds: Azorius (white-blue), Rakdos (black-red), and Simic (green-blue). The set features hybrid mana cards and expands on multicolored themes. It introduces mechanics such as forecast for Azorius, hellbent for Rakdos, and graft for Simic. It also includes split cards representing guild combinations. These elements, combined with the urban guild conflicts, create the flavor of a sprawling city on the brink of upheaval, where order clashes with chaos and adaptation amid dissolution.
