The Plane of Innistrad
Dark Ascension continues the gothic horror story on Innistrad in Magic: The Gathering. With the archangel Avacyn still missing, the protective magic of the Church is failing. Nights grow longer and more dangerous as the plane descends deeper into darkness and the barriers between humanity and the monsters weaken.
The Conflict on Innistrad
In the story of Dark Ascension, the monsters of Innistrad grow bolder and more numerous. Werewolf packs hunt in greater force, vampires expand their influence, and the dead rise in ever-increasing numbers. Humanity fights a desperate defensive battle as the forces of darkness ascend and threaten to overwhelm the remaining human settlements.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Dark Ascension
Dark Ascension intensifies the horror themes in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces the Undying mechanic, allowing creatures to return from the graveyard with a +1/+1 counter, and Fateful Hour, which grants powerful bonuses when a player is at 5 life or less. The set expands on transforming double-faced cards, particularly werewolves, and strengthens graveyard and monster synergies to evoke a world sliding further into despair and monstrous dominance.
