The Plane of Mirrodin
Darksteel is a Magic: The Gathering set set on the plane of Mirrodin, an artificial world created by the planeswalker Karn and illuminated by five suns. This metallic plane is covered in metal and inhabited by various races including elves, leonin, vedalken, and goblins, along with numerous constructs and artifact creatures.
The Conflict on Mirrodin
In the story of Darksteel, the elf Glissa Sunseeker learns that the world is hollow and, accompanied by Slobad and Bosh, fights her way through the vedalken capital of Lumengrid into Mirrodin’s interior. There, amid mycosynth towers reaching toward an inner sun, she discovers that Memnarch is real and is building the Darksteel Eye, a device to achieve complete omniscience over the plane.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Darksteel
Darksteel in Magic: The Gathering continues the Mirrodin block’s focus on artifacts and introduces the indestructible keyword ability on darksteel artifacts. These artifacts cannot be destroyed by any means, reinforcing themes of unbreakable constructs amid the metallic landscape. The set expands artifact synergy while emphasizing the emergence of an indestructible force tied to the plane’s hidden secrets. These elements create the flavor of a world where ancient metallic power surfaces as Glissa confronts the forces seeking control of Mirrodin.
