The Weatherlight Crew's Escape from Rath in Magic: The Gathering Exodus

Magic: The Gathering's Exodus set is set on the artificial plane of Rath, an engineered Phyrexian world created to facilitate the overlay onto Dominaria. The plane features Volrath's Stronghold and the Skyshroud Forest, serving as the site of the final confrontations in the Tempest block of Magic: The Gathering.

Retreat Through Volrath's Stronghold in the Story of Exodus

In the central conflict of Exodus, the crew of the Weatherlight has rescued Captain Sisay and the pieces of the Legacy and now must retreat through Volrath's Stronghold to escape to the portal that would lead them off of Rath. Volrath and his main lieutenant Greven il-Vec will stop at nothing to destroy the crew and reclaim the ancient artifacts. However, they must also stave off the combined assault of Volrath's Stronghold by the elves of the Skyshroud Forest and the human tribes of the Kor, Vec, and Dal, recently reunited by Gerrard. The crew makes their escape to Dominaria.

Buyback, Shadow, Oaths, and Keepers in Magic: The Gathering Exodus

Mechanically, Exodus in Magic: The Gathering continues the block's Buyback and Shadow mechanics without introducing new keywords. Buyback costs on several cards can be paid with life or by discarding cards, broadening the previously seen costs of paying mana or sacrificing a land. The set includes two thematic sets of cards: Oaths, enchantments with upkeep effects that work to equalize a resource, and Keepers, creatures with abilities usable only when the player is behind in that resource. Flavorfully, these elements evoke the themes of resource management and desperate alliances during the escape from Phyrexian-controlled Rath.
