The Conflict on Ravnica
In the story of Guilds of Ravnica, tension builds across the guilds as the influence of the elder dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas grows. Guild leaders face mysterious threats, with some disappearing or dying. Vraska assumes leadership of the Golgari Swarm as part of her dealings with Bolas. The guilds sense an approaching upheaval, with internal power struggles and external manipulation foreshadowing larger conflict on the plane.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Guilds of Ravnica
Guilds of Ravnica emphasizes guild identity and politics in Magic: The Gathering. Each of the five guilds features a signature mechanic: Surveil for Dimir (look at the top cards of your library and choose where they go), Jump-start for Izzet (cast spells from your graveyard by discarding a card), Undergrowth for Golgari (effects that scale with the number of creature cards in your graveyard), Mentor for Boros (put +1/+1 counters on other attacking creatures with lesser power), and Convoke for Selesnya (tap creatures to help pay for spells).
