The Plane of Ravnica
Gatecrash is set on Ravnica, the vast city-plane in Magic: The Gathering entirely covered by a layered urban metropolis governed by ten powerful guilds. The set focuses on the second group of five guilds—Boros Legion, House Dimir, Gruul Clans, Orzhov Syndicate, and Simic Combine—each with its own distinct philosophy and territory. The ancient Guildpact that once enforced peace among the guilds has failed, leaving Ravnica in a state of rising tension and open rivalry.
The Conflict on Ravnica
In the story of Gatecrash, the guilds clash directly as the balance of power shifts dramatically. Planeswalker Jace Beleren investigates the breakdown of the Guildpact while the guilds pursue their individual agendas: the Boros Legion wages open war, the Dimir scheme in the shadows, the Gruul raid from the outskirts, the Orzhov tighten their economic grip, and the Simic experiment in hidden laboratories. These escalating conflicts foreshadow the larger events of the Return to Ravnica block.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Gatecrash
Gatecrash emphasizes guild identity and aggressive gameplay in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces five new guild-specific mechanics: Battalion for Boros (bonuses when attacking with multiple creatures), Cipher for Dimir (encoding spells onto creatures), Bloodrush for Gruul (discarding creatures for temporary combat boosts), Extort for Orzhov (draining life whenever you cast a spell), and Evolve for Simic (creatures growing stronger based on the stats of creatures that enter the battlefield). These mechanics, combined with guildgates and strong two-color themes, capture the political intrigue and factional warfare of Ravnica’s guilds.
