The Plane of Ikoria
Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths takes place on Ikoria, a monster-dominated plane in Magic: The Gathering. Giant behemoths rule the wilds, while humans and other races survive in heavily fortified sanctuaries. The plane features five distinct triomes—vast combined biomes—each shaped by unique crystal formations and environmental hazards. Some humans known as bonders form special metaphysical connections with monsters, while most maintain a wary, often hostile relationship with the massive creatures that constantly threaten their settlements.
The Conflict on Ikoria
In the story of Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, the monsters of the plane begin mutating at an accelerated rate, making them more dangerous and unpredictable. Planeswalker Vivien Reid arrives to study the creatures, while native soldier Lukka, seeking to protect the sanctuary of Drannith, becomes involved in events surrounding a mysterious artifact known as the Ozolith. His actions lead to unintended consequences that escalate the conflict between humans and the ever-evolving behemoths across the plane.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths
Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths emphasizes building and customizing powerful monsters in Magic: The Gathering. The signature mechanic Mutate lets players stack creature cards onto non-Human creatures, combining their abilities and power. It also introduces Companion, a new deckbuilding rule allowing one special creature outside the main deck, along with keyword counters that grant abilities like flying or trample. These mechanics, combined with returning Cycling and strong themes of adaptation and monster evolution, capture the plane’s flavor of dynamic, ever-changing monstrous threats.
