The Plane of Tarkir
Khans of Tarkir introduces Tarkir, a war-torn plane in Magic: The Gathering where dragons have been extinct for centuries. The plane is dominated by five powerful clans descended from ancient dragon hunters: the endurance-focused Abzan Houses, the mystical Jeskai Way, the ruthless Sultai Brood, the aggressive Mardu Horde, and the savage Temur Frontier. Each clan controls vast territories and follows its own code of survival in a harsh, feudal world.
The Conflict on Tarkir
In the story of Khans of Tarkir, the five clans wage endless war against one another for dominance. Planeswalker Sarkhan Vol, a dragon worshiper, searches for signs of the ancient dragons he believes once ruled the plane. The clans battle for scarce resources and territory, each led by a powerful khan. Hidden beneath the surface lies the truth of Tarkir’s history and the fate of the dragons that once defined it.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Khans of Tarkir
Khans of Tarkir emphasizes clan warfare and three-color synergies in Magic: The Gathering. It reintroduces the Morph mechanic, allowing creatures to be cast face down as 2/2s and turned face up later. Each clan has a signature mechanic: Outlast (Abzan), Prowess (Jeskai), Delve (Sultai), Raid (Mardu), and Ferocious (Temur). These elements, combined with strong multicolored themes and warrior-horde flavor, capture the brutal, clan-based struggle for survival on a dragonless Tarkir.
