Otaria Under Siege in Magic: The Gathering Legions
Magic: The Gathering's Legions set is set on Otaria, a continent of the plane Dominaria torn by conflict between rival factions and legendary beings. The backdrop features ongoing struggles involving the Cabal, angelic forces, and other groups shaped by recent events on the plane.
Alliances, Battles, and the Birth of Karona in Legions
In the story of Legions, Kamahl allies uneasily with the Cabal to stop Akroma, who seeks the destruction of Phage even after the death of her creator Ixidor. Phage, formerly Jeska and Kamahl's sister, was transformed through Cabal magic. The set reintroduces Slivers as clones developed by the Riptide Project. Key story beats lead to the final battle in which Phage and Akroma merge with Zagorka to form Karona, a significant new entity.
The Creature-Only Identity and Mechanics of Legions
Legions stands out in Magic: The Gathering as the first creature-only expansion, with all 145 cards centered on creatures to evoke the feel of mustering legions for war. Mechanically, it introduces Amplify, enabling creatures to grow stronger by revealing others of the same type from hand, alongside the debut of double strike, morph triggers, and provoke. Flavorfully, the set celebrates creature types and tribal play, prominently featuring returning Slivers and cards that highlight army-building and coordinated forces, including Mistform Ultimus with every creature type.
