The Plane of Innistrad
Innistrad: Midnight Hunt returns to Innistrad, a gothic horror plane in Magic: The Gathering where humans live in constant fear of vampires, werewolves, zombies, and other monsters. The plane has fallen under an unnatural lengthening of nights, with days growing shorter as the balance between day and night frays following earlier calamities including the imprisonment of Emrakul in the moon.
The Conflict on Innistrad
In the story of Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, werewolf packs grow increasingly aggressive under the prolonged darkness. The planeswalker Arlinn Kord investigates a new, deadlier breed of werewolves while confronting her former mentor Tovolar, who seeks to claim perpetual night for his Howlpack. During the Harvesttide festival, humans and witches of the Dawnhart Coven gather to perform an ancient ritual at the Celestus in an effort to restore balance between day and night.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Innistrad: Midnight Hunt
Innistrad: Midnight Hunt emphasizes the eternal struggle between day and night in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces the Day/Night cycle—a global game designation that transforms double-faced cards with Daybound and Nightbound—primarily on werewolves that become more powerful at night. The set also features the Coven mechanic and strong tribal themes centered on Werewolves and Humans, evoking the gothic horror atmosphere of a world threatened by endless darkness.
