The Plane of Lorwyn
Morningtide continues the story on Lorwyn, a bright and idyllic plane in Magic: The Gathering characterized by eternal daylight and vibrant natural beauty. The plane is home to various folk tribes—including kithkin, elves, merfolk, goblins, elementals, faeries, treefolk, and giants—who live in harmony with the ever-present dawn and the natural cycles of the world.
The Conflict on Lorwyn
In the story of Morningtide, the plane experiences a subtle but significant shift as the long morning begins to intensify. The tribes sense changes in the aurora and the natural order. Champions and heroes among the folk rise to prominence as old rivalries and ambitions surface, while the plane itself stirs with greater power and potential upheaval on the horizon.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Morningtide
Morningtide strengthens tribal themes in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces the Retrace mechanic, allowing players to cast spells from the graveyard by discarding a land card. The set expands support for the eight major creature types of Lorwyn with powerful tribal lords, synergies, and “morning” or dawn-themed effects. These mechanics, paired with the plane’s folklore-inspired creatures and vibrant, storybook aesthetic, capture the flavor of an idyllic world awakening to greater destiny and impending change.
