The Succession Crisis on Rath in Magic: The Gathering Nemesis
Magic: The Gathering's Nemesis set unfolds on the artificial plane of Rath, an engineered Phyrexian world created to facilitate the coming overlay onto Dominaria as the Phyrexian invasion approaches.
Crovax's Ascension and Rebel Resistance in Nemesis
In the central conflict of Nemesis, Volrath abandons his post as Evincar, creating a power vacuum. Phyrexian emissary Belbe oversees the succession contest as Crovax, a transformed former member of the Weatherlight crew, competes against Ertai. Through brutality and acts of violence, Crovax rises to become the new Evincar. The rebels of Rath, united under Eladamri, resist Phyrexian control in a bid for freedom.
Fading and Rebel Themes in Magic: The Gathering Nemesis
As the middle set in the Masques block of Magic: The Gathering, Nemesis introduces the Fading mechanic, in which permanents enter with time counters and are sacrificed when those counters are removed. It continues and expands the block's Rebel and Mercenary tutor mechanics, allowing library searches for specific creatures that represent the rebellion and its enforcers. The set maintains Spellshaper and alternative casting cost themes, creating a gameplay identity of temporary forces, political power struggles, and the machinery of conquest on Rath.
