The Plane of New Phyrexia
New Phyrexia is set on the plane of Mirrodin in Magic: The Gathering, now almost entirely overtaken by the Phyrexian invasion and renamed New Phyrexia. The once-metallic world has been corrupted by glistening oil, transforming its landscape into a nightmarish realm divided into five colored spheres, each ruled by a Phyrexian Praetor and dedicated to a distinct aspect of Phyrexian perfection.
The Conflict on New Phyrexia
In the story of New Phyrexia, the Phyrexian forces achieve final victory over the Mirran resistance. The remaining Mirrans fight a desperate, losing battle as the plane undergoes full compleation. Planeswalkers and Mirran survivors witness the culmination of the long war, with the Phyrexian Praetors consolidating power and the last pockets of resistance being overwhelmed.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of New Phyrexia
New Phyrexia embodies corruption and Phyrexian supremacy in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces the Phyrexian mana mechanic, allowing colored mana costs to be paid with life instead of mana. The set continues and expands the Infect mechanic while featuring strong themes of compleation, artifact corruption, and the five Phyrexian factions. These elements capture the flavor of a plane fully transformed by the Phyrexian invasion and the horror of total conquest.
