In the central conflict of Planeshift, the Rathi Overlay delivers millions of Phyrexian troops directly onto Dominaria. Coalition forces regroup and rush to defend critical locations including Urborg and Keld. Heroes form alliances with forces arriving from Rath such as the Skyshroud elves as battles rage across multiple fronts.
Domain and Gating Mechanics in Magic: The Gathering Planeshift
As part of the Invasion block in Magic: The Gathering, Planeshift introduces the Gating mechanic in which certain creatures return another creature to its owner's hand when they enter the battlefield. It expands the Domain mechanic which grows more powerful with each additional basic land type controlled and further develops Kicker with alternative costs. The set's flavor and mechanical identity reflects the chaos of planar overlay through multicolored cards and diverse creature types from both Dominaria and Rath.
