The Plane of Ravnica
Return to Ravnica returns to Ravnica, the vast city-plane in Magic: The Gathering entirely covered by a sprawling, layered metropolis governed by ten powerful guilds. The set focuses on the first five guilds: Azorius Senate, Izzet League, Rakdos Cult, Golgari Swarm, and Selesnya Conclave. The ancient Guildpact that maintained balance between the guilds has weakened, allowing old rivalries and ambitions to resurface across the urban districts.
The Conflict on Ravnica
In the story of Return to Ravnica, the guilds grow increasingly bold and independent as the Guildpact frays. Planeswalker Jace Beleren arrives on the plane and becomes entangled in guild politics while investigating the failing pact. Each guild pursues its own agenda: the Azorius enforce strict laws, the Izzet experiment wildly, the Rakdos revel in chaos, the Golgari operate in the undercity, and the Selesnya seek harmony through nature and community, setting the stage for larger conflict.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Return to Ravnica
Return to Ravnica emphasizes guild identity and multicolored strategies in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces five guild-specific mechanics: Detain for Azorius (temporarily locking down creatures), Overload for Izzet (alternative cost for mass effects), Unleash for Rakdos (creatures enter with +1/+1 counters but lose abilities if they attack), Scavenge for Golgari (exiling creatures from graveyard for +1/+1 counters), and Populate for Selesnya (copying creature tokens). These mechanics, along with guildgates and strong two-color themes, capture the political intrigue, innovation, and factional diversity of Ravnica’s guilds.
