The Plane of Mirrodin
Scars of Mirrodin is set on Mirrodin, a metallic plane in Magic: The Gathering. Once a shining world of artifacts and innovation, Mirrodin is beginning to show signs of corruption as the glistening oil spreads. The plane’s five districts—Copperline, the Oxidda Mountains, the Razorfields, the Glimmervoid, and the Mephidross—are home to various races including humans, elves, goblins, and vedalken, all now facing an emerging threat from within.
The Conflict on Mirrodin
In the story of Scars of Mirrodin, the Phyrexian invasion begins in earnest. The glistening oil, long dormant on the plane, starts corrupting metal and flesh alike. Planeswalker Venser and Mirran leaders such as Koth discover the growing infection. What begins as isolated incidents of compleation escalates into open conflict as the Mirrans slowly realize the scale of the Phyrexian threat infiltrating their world.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Scars of Mirrodin
Scars of Mirrodin introduces the horror of corruption and the power of artifacts in Magic: The Gathering. It premieres the Infect mechanic, which deals damage in the form of poison counters, and Metalcraft, rewarding players who control three or more artifacts. The set also features Proliferate, allowing players to add counters to permanents and players. These mechanics, combined with strong artifact themes and poison strategies, capture the flavor of a once-proud metallic world beginning to rot from within.
