The Plane of Arcavios
Strixhaven: School of Mages is set on the plane of Arcavios in Magic: The Gathering. The plane’s primary focus is Strixhaven University, a premier institution of magical learning founded over 700 years ago by five elder spellcasting dragons. The university is divided into five colleges—Lorehold, Prismari, Quandrix, Silverquill, and Witherbloom—each dedicated to the study of opposing pairs of mana colors and distinct magical disciplines. Students from across the Multiverse come to study magecraft in this academic environment.
The Conflict on Arcavios
In the story of Strixhaven: School of Mages, new students including the planeswalker twins Will and Rowan Kenrith arrive at the university. They become involved in campus life and larger threats as an antagonistic group known as the Oriq seeks to undermine Strixhaven. Planeswalker Liliana Vess, operating under the alias Professor Onyx, teaches at the university while pursuing her own goals. The narrative explores student rivalries between colleges, personal growth, and the brewing conflict with external forces threatening the institution.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Strixhaven: School of Mages
Strixhaven: School of Mages captures the theme of magical academia in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces the Magecraft mechanic, which triggers whenever you cast an instant or sorcery, along with Learn and Lesson cards that allow players to retrieve specific sideboard-like spells. The set also features Modal Double-Faced Cards representing creatures and their associated spells, plus strong support for instants and sorceries. These mechanics, paired with college-themed factions and legendary professors, evoke the experience of studying magic at a prestigious university.
