The Plane of Theros
Theros introduces Theros, a plane in Magic: The Gathering inspired by ancient Greek mythology. Mortals live in city-states called poleis, while gods dwell in the starry realm of Nyx, visible as constellations in the night sky. The plane is filled with legendary heroes, epic monsters, and divine intervention, where acts of great valor can elevate mortals toward godhood and dreams connect the mortal world to Nyx.
The Conflict on Theros
In the story of Theros, planeswalker Elspeth Tirel arrives on the plane seeking redemption after her previous ordeals. She becomes entangled in the affairs of the gods and mortals. Meanwhile, the satyr Xenagos begins manipulating events from the shadows, sowing discord that threatens the balance between the divine and mortal realms. The gods watch over their champions as heroism and ambition drive conflict across Theros.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Theros
Theros captures mythological heroism and divine power in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces the Bestow mechanic, allowing enchantment creatures to be cast as auras that grant their abilities to other creatures. The set also features Monstrosity, which transforms creatures into larger, more powerful versions, and Heroic, which triggers bonuses when creatures are targeted by spells. These mechanics, combined with enchantment themes, gods, and legendary creatures, evoke the epic tales of heroes, monsters, and gods on a Greek-inspired plane.
