War of the Spark takes place on Ravnica, the densely populated city-plane in Magic: The Gathering governed by ten powerful guilds. The massive urban landscape serves as the battlefield for a cataclysmic conflict that draws planeswalkers from across the multiverse to one location.

The Conflict on Ravnica

In the story of War of the Spark, the elder dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas launches his final conquest by invading Ravnica with the Dreadhorde, an army of undead Eternals. He activates the Immortal Sun to prevent planeswalkers from leaving the plane and attempts to cast the Elderspell, a ritual designed to harvest the sparks of gathered planeswalkers to achieve godhood. In response, dozens of planeswalkers unite with the Gatewatch and Ravnica's guilds to oppose him in an all-out war.

The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of War of the Spark

War of the Spark emphasizes planeswalkers as a central theme in Magic: The Gathering. The set features an unprecedented number of planeswalker cards and introduces the Amass mechanic, which creates and grows Zombie Army tokens to represent Bolas's invading forces.
