The Plane of Ixalan

Ixalan is set on Ixalan, a tropical plane in Magic: The Gathering inspired by Mesoamerican civilizations and age-of-sail piracy. The plane features dense jungles, ancient ruins, and dangerous beasts. Four main factions vie for power: the dinosaur-riding humans of the Sun Empire, the merfolk River Heralds who guard ancient knowledge, the vampiric Legion of Dusk from Torrezon, and the pirate crews of the Brazen Coalition. At the heart of the continent lies the legendary golden city of Orazca, long hidden in myth.

The Conflict on Ixalan

In the story of Ixalan, the location of Orazca and its powerful artifact, the Immortal Sun, is revealed. The four factions launch expeditions and clash in open conflict across the jungles and seas in a race to claim the city and the artifact’s immense power. Planeswalker Jace Beleren arrives on the plane with amnesia and becomes entangled in events, while the gorgon planeswalker Vraska operates among the pirates. Their paths cross amid the escalating factional rivalries.

The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Ixalan

Ixalan emphasizes tribal themes and exploration in Magic: The Gathering. It introduces the Enrage mechanic for Dinosaurs (triggering when they are dealt damage), Raid for Pirates (rewarding attacks), and Explore (a keyword action for revealing and potentially playing lands). The set prominently features Treasure tokens for flexible mana and supports strong Dinosaur, Merfolk, Vampire, and Pirate synergies, capturing the flavor of discovery, ancient power, and factional adventure on the plane.
