The Plane of Zendikar
Zendikar Rising returns to Zendikar, a mana-rich plane in Magic: The Gathering defined by its volatile, ever-shifting landscapes known as the Roil. The plane features seven continents including Akoum, Bala Ged, Guul Draz, Murasa, Ondu, Sejiri, and Tazeem. Ancient floating Skyclaves, ruined cities suspended in the air, dot the landscape, while adventurers explore dangerous dungeons and hedrons left from the Eldrazi imprisonment. Even after the defeat of the Eldrazi titans, the Roil continues to reshape the terrain, making Zendikar a world of constant peril and discovery.
The Conflict on Zendikar
In the story of Zendikar Rising, the kor planeswalker Nahiri returns to her home plane seeking to calm the Roil and restore Zendikar to its former glory. She funds expeditions and searches for powerful ancient artifacts, including the Lithoform Core. Her efforts bring her into conflict with other planeswalkers and the inhabitants of Zendikar as the reactivation of Skyclaves and pursuit of these relics unleash new chaos across the plane. The narrative explores themes of restoration, hubris, and the consequences of tampering with ancient powers in a world still healing from the Eldrazi invasion.
The Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Zendikar Rising
Zendikar Rising captures the spirit of adventure and exploration central to Magic: The Gathering’s Zendikar plane. Key mechanics include Party, which rewards assembling a group of Cleric, Rogue, Warrior, and Wizard creatures; returning Landfall, which triggers powerful effects whenever lands enter the battlefield; Kicker for scalable spells; and a full set of Modal Double-Faced Cards (MDFCs) that allow players to choose between casting a spell or playing a land. These elements, paired with strong land themes and dungeon-crawling flavor, evoke the excitement of perilous expeditions into unknown ruins.
