Asymmetric One-vs-Many Battles in Magic: The Gathering Archenemy

Magic: The Gathering's Archenemy turns casual multiplayer games into intense asymmetric contests where one player becomes the archenemy facing a coordinated team of two or three opponents. This variant changes a normal game by giving the archenemy 40 starting life and the first turn, while each opponent starts at 20 life. Team members take individual turns but share a common goal, with the added rule that any team member may block for another teammate, fostering cooperation against the empowered solo player.

Scheme Deck and Ongoing Effects in Archenemy

The defining mechanic of the Archenemy format centers on a separate scheme deck of oversized cards. At the beginning of the archenemy’s first main phase each turn, the archenemy sets the top scheme card in motion, resolving its powerful effect—often impacting the entire team or the board state. Schemes typically return to the bottom of the deck after use, though ongoing schemes remain active with continuous effects until abandoned. This creates dramatic swings and strategic depth beyond standard Magic: The Gathering gameplay.

Four Preconstructed Game Packs for Casual Playgroups

Archenemy includes four ready-to-play 60-card decks, each paired with its own 20-card scheme deck of oversized cards. These decks draw from a wide range of existing Magic: The Gathering sets with a few new additions. Playgroups can integrate the product immediately for balanced 1v2 or 1v3 games straight from the box, or mix and match schemes and cards with personal collections to create custom experiences.
