Asymmetric Multiplayer with Scheme Decks in Magic: The Gathering Archenemy Schemes
Magic: The Gathering's Archenemy Schemes supports the Archenemy variant, where one player as the archenemy faces a team of two or three opponents. This format alters a normal game by granting the archenemy 40 starting life and the first turn, while opponents start at 20 life each. Teammates take individual turns but collaborate fully, including the option for any team member to block attacks aimed at another teammate.
Scheme Deck Core Mechanic in Archenemy Schemes
The defining element is the separate scheme deck of oversized cards. At the beginning of the archenemy’s first main phase each turn, the archenemy reveals the top scheme and sets it in motion, resolving its immediate effect. Most schemes return to the bottom of the deck afterward, while ongoing schemes stay face up with continuous effects until abandoned. This mechanic introduces powerful, recurring advantages that shift the balance toward the solo player.
45 Oversized Scheme Cards for Custom Play
Archenemy Schemes provides a collection of 45 oversized scheme cards designed exclusively for the archenemy role. Playgroups can integrate the product by pairing any selection of 20 or more schemes (with no more than two copies of any single scheme) with a standard 60-card deck for the archenemy, while opponents use their own decks. This standalone product enables flexible, repeatable casual multiplayer sessions, custom archenemy builds, or expansion of existing Archenemy collections for ongoing high-stakes team games.
