The Planes of Aetherdrift
Aetherdrift is Magic: The Gathering's interplanar racing set that features the Ghirapur Grand Prix, a death-defying competition spanning Avishkar, Amonkhet, and Muraganda. Omenpaths connect these worlds, enabling racers to traverse diverse landscapes from start to finish. Avishkar, a plane of innovation and aether technology formerly known as Kaladesh and now led by the Avishkar Assembly with capital Ghirapur, serves as the race's hub. Amonkhet offers desert expanses and revived waterways amid its post-cataclysm recovery. Muraganda presents primordial wilderness filled with massive creatures and untamed environments.
The Ghirapur Grand Prix and Central Conflict
The story of Aetherdrift revolves around the high-stakes Ghirapur Grand Prix, where teams from across the Multiverse race for the Aetherspark, an artifact designed to grant Planeswalker abilities. This central conflict unfolds as competitors navigate treacherous stages on each plane, facing environmental hazards and fierce rivalry in a multi-leg circuit. The event, hosted in Ghirapur and expanded interplanarly after the opening of Omenpaths, tests speed, strategy, and survival in pursuit of the ultimate prize.
Mechanical and Flavor Identity of Aetherdrift
In Magic: The Gathering, Aetherdrift emphasizes racing through a strong focus on Vehicles and Mounts, supported by mechanics that evoke velocity and vehicle operation. The new Start Your Engines! ability introduces Speed, a resource that begins at one and rises to a maximum of four when opponents lose life during your turn, unlocking powerful effects at higher levels. Exhaust provides one-time-use activated abilities, while returning elements like Crew and Cycling enhance the flavor of crewing rides and adapting on the fly. Ten two-color teams each embody distinct attitudes and rides, capturing the adrenaline of interplanar competition.
