Finding Combos in a Deck You're Building

2 min read Updated Jul 31, 2026
The deck editor's Combos button checks the deck you have open against Commander Spellbook without exporting anything. Here is which zones it reads, how to narrow a long result list, and why the 1 Card Away tab is the one that changes deckbuilding decisions.

To find combos in a Commander deck you are building, you do not need to export it anywhere. The deck editor has a Combos button that checks the deck you have open against the Commander Spellbook database.

Opening the overlay

The Combos button sits in the deck editor's floating toolbar on desktop, and in the toolbar on mobile. It opens a panel headed Deck Combos with a count summary beside the title. Opening it does not change your deck.

The expand button stretches the panel to full screen. See full deck closes it and puts you back in the card list.

Which cards get checked

Four zones are included: main, command zone, companion, and sideboard. Commanders are sent as commanders, which matters — Commander Spellbook uses the command zone to work out which combos your color identity can reach.

Maybeboard cards are left out. If you are still deciding on a card, move it to the main deck or the sideboard and re-open the overlay.

Reading the two tabs

Results split into In Your Deck and 1 Card Away, each with its own count. On an existing deck, 1 Card Away is usually the busier tab: every entry is one card that would give you a new line, with the missing piece named.

Adding the missing piece

On the 1 Card Away tab, the piece you do not have is highlighted and carries a + Add button, so it goes into the deck without a detour through card search.

Every piece shows its price with a total for the combo, plus TCGPlayer and Cardmarket links.

Narrowing a long list

A tuned Commander deck can return dozens of combos. Three controls cut the list down:

  • Filter combos by card — narrows to combos involving one card in your deck.
  • Brackets — filters by Commander Spellbook's per-combo rating (Ruthless, Spicy, Powerful, Core, Oddball, Exhibition, Banned).
  • Sort — orders by Bracket or Popularity.

Filtering to Ruthless and Spicy shows the lines that can end a game early.

These tags rate individual combos, not the deck. The overlay does not estimate a Commander bracket level (1 Exhibition through 5 cEDH) for the list as a whole — that lives in the Bracket & Game Changers section on the standalone Combo Finder, which you can point at a saved deck.

Results refresh as you build

Results are held for the session, so re-opening the overlay is instant. Adding or removing a card clears them, so you will not see stale combos after an edit and you do not have to reload the page.

Where to go next

If your list is not a deck in your account yet, the standalone Combo Finder takes pasted text and Moxfield or Archidekt imports. To start from one card instead, see Searching Combos by a Single Card. For what the result fields mean, start with What Is the Nerd Leagues Combo Finder?
